In the matter of Percy Schmeiser VS Monsanto...
“…a smart and sympathetic study of the complexities of human nature, a challenge to our tendency to operate on presuppositions, and a meditation on the nature of life.” – Ottawa Citizen
Part court-room drama and part social-satire, this acclaimed docu-drama puts a spotlight in the court case that pitted a Saskatchewan farmer against corporate giant Monsanto. At the centre of the story is the question of not only whether or not a gene can be patented, but how that kind of legality affects all of us on a very human level. This production from Montreal’s Porte Parole has wowed audiences across the country, and features Eric Peterson (Corner Gas) as farmer Percy Schmeiser.
A Porte Parole production, directed by Chris Abraham, with the support from La Coop fédérée
Running Time: 2 hours, 30 minutes, including one intermission.
Bob Says: “More and more we’re in silos in our thinking about topics of concern. That's counterproductive – even dangerous when we’re talking about important issues. This is a wonderful piece of theatre that will certainly spark a conversation about GMOs, but more crucially, help inject some critical thinking into that conversation. I think our patrons will enter believing they know who to champion, but by the end of the night will have a fuller appreciation for all sides. It will be both an intellectually, and viscerally, invigorating night of theatre. We are delighted to have an icon of Canadian theatre – Eric Peterson – on our stage.”
