Kim McCaw

In memory of a PTE pioneer

Kim McCaw put PTE on the map – locally, nationally, and internationally.

His vision was for a theatre that spoke to the community, had deep roots on the Prairies, and brought contemporary Canadian writers and stories to the stage. Under Kim's leadership, PTE introduced World Premiere works by Wendy Lill, Patrick Friesen, Bruce McManus, and Kelly Rebar, amongst others.

He also had the brilliant idea of adapting the stories of Robert Munsch for the stage – an idea that initially was rejected by the author, but Kim was correct. Stage adaptations of Munsch stories have now appeared all over the world, enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of young theatre-goers in Winnipeg and beyond.

Kim brought warmth, courage, passion, artistry and kindness to everything he did. PTE would not exist without him. He is deeply loved, will be truly missed.

Dear friends of Kim. This is Kim's family writing.

We are sad to inform you of Kim's passing. He died peacefully on September 25, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta, surrounded by his wife, Linda Huffman, and their children, Patrick and Maggie, during his final days.

Kim's career in Canadian theatre was a significant part of his life, and he was profoundly grateful for the opportunities it offered him. He made countless friends and forged lasting relationships within the vibrant theatre community. Kim often spoke about the joy of collaborating with talented colleagues to create extraordinary works of art that touched the hearts of many across Canada. He took particular pride in his contributions to the legacies of Prairie Theatre Exchange, the Banff Playwrights Colony, the University of Alberta's Drama Department, and the Globe Theatre Regina.

In accordance with Kim's wishes, we do not plan a grand memorial service. If you wish to pay tribute to Kim's memory, consider making a donation to Prairie Theatre Exchange's Annual Fund, which supports the continuation and growth of the artistic community he cherished.
