Virtual Wine Tasting Wednesday

Connecting through wine and food

One of the things that we most miss about the shortened theatre season was Wine Tasting Wednesday – gathering with a lively group of theatre-goers and the great folks at Kenaston Wine Market on the second Wednesday of every play run, sampling wines and food carefully selected by Marlies, Pam and their staff.

But we worked with Marlies at Kenaston Wine Market to try something new. She put together a virtual Wine Tasting for every Wednesday in May that we could both share on our social media. Here are the first three posts, in case you missed them, complete with Kenaston's reasons for the selection. All featured wines are available online from Kenaston Wine Market for parking-lot pick-up &/or free contactless delivery in Winnipeg. Visit www.kenastonwine.com.

May 20 - THE GINGERBREAD GIRL

The final PTE Wine Tasting Wednesday is always a celebration. We sit down and share a full, four-course meal catered by Storm Catering - toasting past performances and reveling in the community PTE’s live performances bring to our lives. The final play of 2019-20 was to have been The Gingerbread Girl by Winnipeg writer/actor/director @SharonBajer – a world premiere to end the season. A story of love, family, expectations, loss & growing up too fast. Here’s a look at the wines we’d selected:

What better way to honour this Canadian play whose premiere couldn't happen this year than with a Canadian wine? We selected 13th Street Blanc de Blanc, a Méthode Traditionelle from Viseck Vineyard in the Creek Shores appellation of Niagara.

And given the title, we just couldn’t forget gingerbread! Gingerbread is claimed by many different countries and many families have their own traditions surrounding this delicious treat. The symmetry found in gingerbread designs reminded us of the label of Juwel Riesling from the Rheinhessen in Germany. We imagine sipping this while mixing up the dough, smiling, laughing and bonding over baking.

Sitting and eating a meal with family can be uplifting, it can be sad, and it can also just be the simple act of enjoying the shared comforts of daily life. Discussions, celebrations, opinions, reunions, arguments, reconciliations. What wines speak to family meals? We picked a few – the Cuvée des Galets paired with hearty stews, Opawa Pinot Gris with Lake Winnipeg pickerel, and Masi Bardolino and Bolognese – we could go on, but we’d be here forever…
